Schools
In language learning in tandem, native speakers of different languages work together in pairs to increase their knowledge of their partner's language and their intercultural competence through communication as well as mutual help in learning (e.g. help with formulating or corrections). Simultaneously, transferable skills are acquired and practised, such as the ability to learn autonomously and to communicate and co-operate multilingually.
In recent years, research and development projects have produced effective instruments for tandem learning between adults. Increased mobility in the European Union along with the 'virtual' mobility provided by the new information and communication media have now made language learning in tandem also accessible for pupils.
The project partners 5 institutions involved in the training and in-service training of teachers as well as 16 primary and secondary schools in four countries will develop, test and publish materials for this target group during the two project years:
offering help with assessment and self-assessment of tandem work
The products will be developed in all four project languages and will meet the needs of a variety of contexts: age groups, school curricula or technical equipment. They will be tested by participating schools and if necessary improved upon. Products and experience reports will be published via the Internet: on education servers and school networks in the participating countries, on the European Schoolnet (EUN) as well as on the Tandem Servers of the International Tandem Network.
