eTandem Europa
Project information

"eTandem Europa" is a project funded by the European Commission as part of the European Year of Languages 2001.

Project partners

Coordination of the project is headed by the Ruhr-University Bochum (DE) in cooperation with the International Tandem Network. Project partner is the eTandem business Parvis D'Atri/ Szymanski GbR.

Project goals

The goal of this project is to introduce as many European citizens as possible to the opportunity of learning a foreign language with eTandem and to make it easy for these language learners to get started. To this end, publicity campaigns in all European languages and countries are being initiated.

Background

Since 1994, over 30 universities, schools and other educational institutions have researched and successfully implemented eTandem learning opportunities in various European Union funded (LINGUA, ODL) research and development projects.

In addition, they have established the International Tandem Network and its services.

The following institutions in English-speaking countries have participated:

Great Britain:

  • The University of Sheffield (Modern Languages Teaching Center (MLTC) and School of Education)
  • Ecclesbourne School, Duffield/Derby
  • Howick Infant and Primary School, Preston
  • John Port School, Etwall/Derby
  • Norton College, Malton/North Yorkshire
  • Sheffield High School (GDST), Sheffield

Ireland:

  • Trinity College, University of Dublin (Center for Language and Communication
    Studies (CLCS))

USA:

  • University of Rhode Island (Department of Modern Languages). This institution was one of the initiators of e-mail tandem.
